At first, Débora Louis got involved by taking Solidarity Leave. Then she put in place a variety of relationships with organisations and has mobilised for it: thanks to her sponsoring, two NGO's received a support. She explains her approach...
This project supports 50 women from the village of Sakété to develop a farming cooperative. The goals are grain storage, to counter price fluctuations and shortages, and the purchase of equipment to process the grains and tubers (palm oil, etc.) and to propose finished products ensuring better income. A literacy program strengthens their ability to manage and organise the activity. After the construction of a storage warehouse that was begun in 2006, the 2008 project involves outfitting it with solar panels as well as building premises to house the processing units.
Two years ago, I left during my vacation to train Beninese women to become secretaries, in the framework of Actions et Développement, a local partner of Planète Urgence. Since then, I have been returning to Benin regularly to carry out volunteer work in the organisation. In France, and with former volunteers, we attempt to find organisations that can co-finance the association’s projects. More recently, I became the coordinator of the international solidarity project in Sakété for NOA. I will be joining the group in August 2008 during my holidays.
I do not see my role as a one-time event and I am guiding the project through its completion. As far as the choice of projects is concerned, I have been more aware of those aimed at improving the condition of women in Benin, because they are the driving force in these regions. I admire those who fight against traditions to help mindsets to evolve and I want to give them my support.
